Julia Cumming is an American singer-songwriter, bassist, and model, best known as the frontwoman of the NYC-based indie rock band Sunflower Bean. She joined Sunflower Bean, formed by Nick Kivlen and Olive Faber in 2013, and the trio quickly became a prominent fixture in Brooklyn's DIY music scene .
Sunflower Bean's debut album, Human Ceremony (2016), showcased their blend of psychedelic rock, post-punk, and glam influences, with Cumming's vocals and bass playing at the forefront. The band continued to evolve with subsequent releases, including Twentytwo in Blue (2018), Headful of Sugar (2022), Mortal Primetime (2025) each reflecting their growth and experimentation. They have played Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Bonaroo and more.
Beyond her music career, Cumming has made an impact in the fashion industry. In 2014, she became a muse for designer Hedi Slimane, walking in Saint Laurent's Fall/Winter 2014 show and appearing in multiple campaigns. She has also modelled for brands like Valentino, H&M, Diesel, Anna Sui, and Max Mara, and her editorial work has been featured in American and international editions of Vogue.
An advocate for political activism, Cumming founded "Anger Can Be Power" in 2017, aiming to inspire youth, especially women, to engage in political action. She has interviewed the likes of Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, and Sunflower Bean opened for Bernie Sanders on his 2020 campaign.
