Hikaru Utada

Since their debut on December 9, 1998, Hikaru Utada has achieved numerous remarkable milestones in their career. Their first single, “Automatic/time will tell,” sold over two million copies, establishing them as one of Japan’s top artists at just 15 years old. Their debut album, First Love, shattered Japanese CD sales records that remain unbroken to this day.

In 2022, Utada released their eighth album, BAD MODE, featuring collaborations with Skrillex, A.G. Cook, and Floating Points. The album earned widespread critical acclaim, including a spot on Pitchfork's "The 50 Best Albums of 2022." That same year, they made their festival debut at Coachella with 88rising. In the same year, the Netflix series First Love, inspired by Utada’s iconic discography, became a major hit across Japan and Asia.

Marking 25 years since their debut, Utada returned in April 2024 with the definitive greatest hits album SCIENCE FICTION, followed by the HIKARU UTADA SCIENCE FICTION TOUR 2024, which included stops in Hong Kong and Taipei.

In 2025, they released a series of “Electricity” remixes by renowned producers and made a surprise appearance at Coachella during Arca’s set. They also delivered a standout guest performance at SONICMANIA during Floating Points’ set, marking Utada’s first-ever performance at a Japanese music festival. The following month, “JANE DOE,” a collaboration with Kenshi Yonezu, quickly became a major hit both in Japan and internationally.

Utada opened 2026 by appearing in a global advertising campaign for Burberry, alongside other international stars. In March, they further broadened their international presence with a collaboration on Charlie Puth’s single “Home (feat. Hikaru Utada)”. Shortly following this release, Utada announced a new song “PAPPAPARADISE”, which debuted as the new ending theme for the beloved national anime Chibi Maruko-chan. With the song also appearing in the latest Ayataka commercials, Utada’s influence on the culture remains as strong as ever.
