Dean Chalkley
Since the mid-1990s, Dean Chalkley has established himself as one of the UK’s most distinctive photographers. His work moves between music, style and subcultural life, always driven by a fascination with people and self-expression. Dean’s portraits span underground pioneers to global pop icons.
Whether creating singular portrait studies or expansive multidimensional projects, Dean immerses himself in his subjects and has a passion for what he does, he’s compelled by a deep love for music and its power to stimulate and illuminate.
Dean’s work appears in exhibitions, magazines, books, record sleeves and advertising; personal projects, commissions and collaborations are all part of Deans output.
Originally trained as a Tailor, Dean’s enduring love of sartorial style has inspired and propelled many of his notable projects, for example his partnership with creative director Harris Elliott on the seminal Return of the Rudeboy grew into a major exhibition at Somerset House bringing into sharp focus 21st century Rudeboy culture. Other celebrated series include The New Faces, capturing details of the Mod scene, and Young Souls / Young Souls 23 which focuses on Northern Soul devotees. Dean’s ambitious project New Perspectives expanded this approach, combining photography, film, it also incorporated a 12" single vinyl record release.
Dean’s accolades include the Picture Editors’ Portrait Photographer of the Year and NME’s Outstanding Contribution to Music Photography Award.
Author of several publications Dean’s most recent is BACK IN IBIZA 1998-2003 which draws from his incredible archive stepping back in time to the wild hedonism of Ibiza’s club scene at the turn of the century.
Dean continues to be a prolific image maker constantly excited and engaged in new projects and commissions across the creative landscape.
