We recently sat down with our 2022 Zeitgeist Award winner Chris Suspect who won the coveted prize for his photo of DC punk/metal legends Darkest Hour at DC Brau brewery for their surprise 20th anniversary show.

Hear him discuss his top five tips for music photographers below:

“My top five tips for any music photographer….

  1. Make sure your batteries are fully charged and your memory cards are empty so you can fill them up with all the photos from the show and not run out of space.

  2. Always do your best to get up front in the front row of any performance there. You'll have unfettered, unblocked visual access to the performers.

  3. Never second guess yourself. Always take the picture. And if you think you've taken that picture before, go ahead and try to do something different with that perspective, include another band member in that photo or something cool in the background. Never second guess yourself.

  4. Always get your images back to the club and the musicians after your shoot. You like to think that you value the fact that you either got it for free or gave you the access you needed. So it's always good to do that.

  5. Share your work. But not all of it. Just share some of your best photos online and with the band. Don't give them a photo. Don't post like 80 photos.”
